Thanks to the exceptionally warm spring weather, LA is experiencing a vibrant tapestry of wildflowers in the hills and mountains, many not far from Circa. And our local botanical gardens are bursting with a riot of seasonal color, including an early bloom in The Huntington’s Rose Garden and a Bloom Boom at Descanso Gardens. If you’re on the hunt for wildflowers, we’ve found useful apps, such as PictureThis and iNaturalist, to help you identify plants, record your observations, and connect to the natural world.

To learn more about California’s abundant flora, visit the Theodore Payne Foundation (TPF), a nonprofit organization that inspires and educates Southern Californians about the beauty and ecological benefits of California native plants. Located on 22 acres of beautiful canyon land in the San Fernando Valley, the TPF includes a full-service nursery, alongside display gardens, wild land hiking trails, an art gallery, and educational facilities. Every observation can contribute to biodiversity science, from the rarest butterfly to the most common backyard weed. iNaturalist shares your findings with scientific data repositories like the Global Biodiversity Information Facility to help scientists find and use your data. All you have to do is observe.

The Huntington Rose Garden is blooming early this year! This garden—enjoyed by hundreds of thousands of visitors each year—was created in 1908 for the private enjoyment of Henry E. and Arabella Huntington. The three-acre garden has gone through many transformations since that time. It now comprises more than 2,500 individual plants and more than 1,300 cultivated varieties (cultivars). Descanso Gardens is a botanical garden, living museum, and urban oasis just 20 minutes from downtown Los Angeles. Situated on 150 acres of cultivated and wild land, Descanso Gardens is nestled into a natural bowl by surrounding mountains. The Blue Ribbon Garden is a hidden rooftop garden at Walt Disney Concert Hall. Nearly an acre in size, the garden is enclosed by the hall’s flowing exterior and filled with lush landscaping that blooms throughout the year. What started as a personal connection between just two people, Frank Gehry and Lillian Disney, has become a shared public art experience for concertgoers and Los Angeles tourists alike. One of the garden’s highlights is the Frank Gehry-designed fountain, a tribute to the late Lillian Disney and her love for Royal Delft porcelain vases and roses.

Arlington Garden is not only friendly to people and pets, but also serves as a refuge for Pasadena’s native fauna. Birds, bees and butterflies are particularly abundant and can be seen throughout the year.

The Virginia Robinson Gardens is a unique historic estate, a cultural jewel that transports the visitor back to the birthplace of Beverly Hills. Built in 1911, it was once the residence of retail giants Virginia and Harry Robinson of the J.W. Robinson Co. Department Store. It occupies an illustrious place in history as the first luxury estate built in Beverly Hills. Today, it is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and is open to the public by appointment. The beautiful six-acre property is located behind the iconic Beverly Hills Hotel and has a breathtaking display garden, mansion, and pool pavilion.

Storrier Stearns Japanese Garden spring blooms near Circa residences in downtown Los Angeles

Storrier Stearns Japanese Garden 270 Arlington Dr. Pasadena, CA 91105

Storrier Stearns Japanese Garden was created by Kinzuchi Fujii for Charles and Ellamae Storrier Stearns in 1935. Fujii designed and built Japanese landscapes across Southern California in the first half of the 20th century. Storrier Stearns is his only remaining garden and the only intact example of a major Japanese-style garden created before World War II for a residence in Southern California. This pond-style stroll garden features a fifteen-foot waterfall and a formal teahouse on approximately two acres of land. The garden is considered by many to be a masterwork and it demonstrates the adaptability of Japanese culture in modern America.

Let’s Get Movin’– Drive-In Movies are Back

Nothing says summer quite like a drive-in movie. This iconic American pastime started in 1933, when the first patented drive-in movie theatre opened in New Jersey. By the 1950s and 60s, there were over 4,000 drive-ins throughout the U.S. Today, Southern California is host to some of the most iconic drive-in movie theatres around, with design themes ranging from Route 66 to Tiki kitsch and 50s cool. Other venues, like the Rose Bowl and major swap meets, are outfitting their parking lots with giant outdoor screens and modern sound systems, complete with food trucks and concession stands. You can even pack your own picnic to enjoy in the comfort of your car! So let’s get movin’ – drive-in movies are back.

Tribeca Drive-In Rose Bowl 1001 Rose Bowl Dr, Pasadena, CA 91103

The Tribeca Drive-In is bringing the big screen to America’s backyard this summer to help get communities back together safely through a shared cinematic experience. You’ll see iconic movies like Jaws, E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial, The Dark Knight, Apollo 13, and more, for this month-long drive-in film series that runs from July 2-26. There will also be special screenings for healthcare and frontline workers and concessions from local businesses. Tribeca Drive-In movies are presented by Jane Rosenthal and Robert DeNiro’s Tribeca Film, producer of the Tribeca Film Festival.

Street Food Cinema various locations

Ready to watch a movie in the great outdoors while staying safe and cozy in your car? Street Food Cinema, LA’s largest outdoor movie series, is jumping on the drive-in movie craze, presenting cool flicks and tasty food trucks. The summer schedule features film faves like Edward Scissorhands, Black Panther, The Princess Bride, and Moulin Rouge, to name a few. Venues include Brandeis Bardin Campus in Simi Valley and Ontario International Airport. Most food trucks have vegetarian options.

Mission Tiki Drive-In Theatre 10798 Ramona Ave. Montclair, CA 91763

For those of you who like your movies with a side of kitsch, Mission Tiki Drive-In in Montclair is just the ticket. The Box Office opens 1.5 hours before showtime on Friday and Saturday nights and 1 hour before on Sunday through Thursday. Come early to get the best parking spots. Admission is $10 for adults and $1 for children (5 through 9 years). Check their website for weekly schedule.

Rubidoux Drive-In 3770 Opal St. Riverside, CA 92509

The Rubidoux, with its original 1948 screen tower still standing tall, is the last of the classic drive-in theatres remaining in Southern California. Though it retains much of its original character, time has transformed this gem into a thoroughly modern outdoor theatre. The incorporation of FM transmitters and Technalight digital projection ensures the best possible picture and sound available. The box office and snack bar have gotten a new treatment as well, and are now reminiscent of the theatre’s original postwar Route 66 heritage.

The Paramount Drive-In Theatres 7770 Rosecrans Ave. Paramount, CA 90723

The Paramount Swap Meet is reviving a favorite American pastime – the drive-in movie. Paramount Drive-In Theatres offers a double feature on two 75 foot screens, digital projection with FM radio sound, and full snack bar. Paramount’s aim is to help preserve a wonderful American tradition, and with the implementation of some new technology, attract younger audiences. Admission is $9 per adult. All motor vehicles are welcome, including trucks and RVs.

Van Buren Drive-In Theatre 3035 Van Buren Boulevard, Riverside, CA 92503

This historic circa-1964 drive-in theater is showing double features seven nights a week! The $10 adult ticket allows you admission for two movies playing on the same screen, which means you’ll get to see two movies for half the price. The audio is broadcast through an FM transmitter (radio), so make sure you have a good sound system in your vehicle. If you don’t have an FM transmitter in your car, you can bring a battery-operated stereo with speakers to hear the movies. The Snack Bar has full concessions and you can visit Snack Bar Express to order from your car.

Roadium Drive-In 2500 W Redondo Beach Blvd, Torrance, CA 90504

The fun continues all summer long. The Roadium Drive-In is excited to provide the community with safe, socially distant entertainment with their “Summer Fridays at the Drive-In” series, showing classic movies with many on-site activities as well. The recently remodeled snack bar is open for hot food and concessions. Orders can be placed in person in a socially distant fashion. Phone and online orders are also available.

Pacific Theatres Vineland Drive-In 443 Vineland Ave, City of Industry, CA 91746

Pacific Theatres Vineland Drive-In is now open nightly so that you can enjoy movies from the comfort and safety of your cars. A real Southern California icon, Pacific Theatres opened the Vineland Drive-In in 1955 with James Mason in “20,000 Leagues Under the Sea” and in 1981 it expanded to become a 4-screen theatre. Gates open at 6:30 pm on Fri. & Sat. and at 7:00 pm Sun. – Thurs. Car FM radio or portable FM radio required to listen to the movie.

The Metropolitan Opera Nightly Opera Stream

During this extraordinary time, the Met hopes to brighten the lives of their audience members even while their stage is dark. The Metropolitan Opera is offering free Nightly Opera Streams on their website – performances that show off opera at its most thrilling, thought-provoking, and uplifting. Each day, a different encore presentation from the company’s Live in HD series is available for free streaming, with each performance available for a period of 23 hours, from 7:30 p.m. EDT until 6:30 p.m. the following day. The schedule will include outstanding complete performances from the past 14 years of cinema transmissions, starring all of opera’s greatest singers.

Geffen Stayhouse, presented by the Geffen Playhouse, is sharing exclusive, original content every Wednesday from some of their wonderful Geffen alumns and favorite theater artists. You can also watch full-length productions of Geffen Playhouse shows on BroadwayHD, including Long Day’s Journey Into Night, featuring Alfred Molina and Jane Kaczmarek; Thom Pain, featuring Rainn Wilson (The Office); and Benjamin Scheuer’s The Lion. Bavel

Located in Downtown Los Angeles’ Arts District, Bavel is a Middle Eastern restaurant from Bestia’s Chefs Ori Menashe and Genevieve Gergis. With family roots in Israel, Morocco, Turkey, and Egypt, Ori and Genevieve always wanted to open a restaurant that showcases the cuisines of their family lineages, bringing together the flavors and dishes they grew up with. The name Bavel stems from the story of Babel, from the original Old Testament. The story of Bavel is from a time when the Middle East was one. The people of Babylon came together to build a tower to heaven, but God didn’t want the tower to succeed. He gave the people different languages so they could no longer communicate and work together. When Ori and Genevieve read this story, the word Bavel resonated with them, because it was written during a time when everything was one.

Hollyhock House Virtual Tour

The newly renovated Frank Lloyd Wright masterpiece, Hollyhock House, was recently named a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The J. Paul Getty Museum, Los Angeles

The J. Paul Getty Museum provides a backdrop of dramatic architecture, tranquil gardens, and stunning views of Los Angeles for its art collection. It houses works dating from the 8th through the 21st century, including European paintings, drawings, sculpture, illuminated manuscripts, decorative arts, and European, American and Asian photographs.

National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art, Seoul

Since opening its door in 1969, the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art (MMCA) has established itself as a representative institution of Korean modern art. The museum’s four branches carry out MMCA’s commitment to the art and culture of Korea by enriching the first-hand cultural experience of the viewing public. Through its various locations, MMCA intends to function as a cultural platform that encourages communication and cross-pollination of contemporary art with other various disciplines of art, science, and humanities.

National Museum of Anthropology, Mexico City

Explore this museum and you’ll find at its center at huge pond underneath a vast square concrete structure supported by a single pillar known as el paraguas, or the umbrella. Around this are 23 exhibit rooms displaying treasures, including Mayan civilization artifacts such as the Stone of the Sun and giant stone heads that were found in the jungles of Tabasco and Veracruz.

MASP, São Paulo

This architectural landmark in São Paulo was designed by Lina Bo Bardi and is Brazil’s first modern museum. The floating design is mirrored in its internal art displays, with its collection of artworks suspended in perspex frames that create the illusion that the canvases are hovering above the ground.

When Al Cassell opened Cassell’s Hamburgers in 1948, it became an instant icon in the LA lunch counter scene. Cassell’s DTLA stays true to the founder’s original principles of being a hamburger shop with a focus on premium beef, ground daily in house. Cassell’s uses many of the legacy recipes, but the menu has been expanded to classic milkshakes and malts, a 50s breakfast menu, coffee bar, house made pies, and a fully stocked bar.

Tommy’s Original World Famous Hamburgers 2575 W Beverly Blvd. Los Angeles, CA 90026

We dare you to deny that you’ve never wended your way to Tommy’s Original World Famous Hamburger after an appetite-inducing night on the town! Open 24 hours, the Shack, as it’s affectionately known, is a favorite of the nocturnal crowd, especially after Dodgers games. Since 1946, the Original Tommy’s hamburger stand has been serving burgers, fries and hot dogs, topped with their signature chili, from a walk up window where the only dine-in option is a stainless steel countertop. While there are dozens of locations in California and Nevada (including imposters), Tommy’s Original World Famous Hamburgers on Beverly Boulevard in Westlake is the bomb. Not a night owl? Tommy’s serves breakfast, lunch dinner, and coffee.

Buddy’s DTLA 363 S Broadway, Los Angeles, CA 90013

Ready for some classic affordable diner-inspired grub? For the traditionalist, Buddy’s offers a mouthwatering cheeseburger (lettuce, tomato, onion, mustard and American cheese, served on a Martin’s potato roll) for just $7. For a vegetarian option, try the Impossible Burger – a classic cheeseburger made with Impossible™ plant-based patty, with lettuce, tomato, onion, mustard and American cheese on a Martin’s Potato Roll. Other items include the Chicken Parm Sandwich and the Hash Burger veggie patty (roasted cauliflower, mushroom, farro), caramelized onion, fried onion, American cheese). Located on Cesar E Chavez Ave, formally known as Brooklyn Ave, George’s Drive In was a place made for the simple things in life – burgers, pastrami, shakes and fries – serving the community since 1960. Under new ownership and management, this neighborhood staple has returned to its roots in the beautiful East Los Angeles community of Boyle Heights. Featuring a classic menu, similar to one that once graced 2311 Brooklyn Ave, “Georges Burger Stand” is officially back in business. Offering a menu that serves no frozen meats, they are proud to serve simple, fun, quality food at an affordable price.

LA Café strives to give you the freshest and best experience possible, using organic ingredients whenever possible, and all natural meats roasted in-house. The Escondite 410 Boyd St. Los Angeles, CA 90013

The Escondite ( The Hideout ) opened its doors in Los Angeles, CA in 2011. This hidden roadhouse has since then committed its efforts to create an environment for Downtown locals to eat, drink, and listen to free live music daily. They pride themselves on having deliciously scrumptious food, but at an affordable and reasonable price. There are no substitutions on the house created burgers. All burgers are served with a choice of 6oz beef patty, chicken breast, or vegetarian patty, as well as a choice of either fries or salad.

The Black Sheep 126 E 6th St, Los Angeles, CA 90014

This welcoming gastropub features craft brews on tap, and hearty burgers and bar bites with an Asian twist. Sandwiched between the fancy Mignon Wine and Cheese Bar on one side and the venerable Cole’s on the other, this super casual joint could very well be the black sheep of the neighborhood – except for the lines that stretch down the street. Try the eponymous Black Sheep burger (gouda, caramelized onions, garlic aioli, a couple thick slabs of bacon, and some arugula to keep it fresh). If you’re not feeling the beef, you can swap in a veggie patty. Pair your burger with Black Sheep’s truffle or carne asada tater tots, or just go for some good old-fashioned French fries!
