The cookbooks are organized in geographical departments such as the Americas, Asia, the Middle East, Mediterranean, and Europe, and categories like pastries and baking, beverages, general food writing, and reference books. Owned and operated by longtime DTLA residents Stephen and Jodi Zeigler, These Days is a gallery, store, and publisher located in downtown Los Angeles. Since its first exhibition in 2014, the gallery has exhibited a diverse range of work including abstract paintings by photographer Nick Waplington, photography by Gusmano Cesaretti, Lookout & Wonderland’s collaborative fiber art project, and Ian Reid’s photographs of New York’s BDSM community. Though their interests are varied, These Days’ embrace of creative rebellion and nonconformist culture, communities, and artists is apparent in everything they curate. In 2016, These Days began publishing with work by Gusmano Cesaretti, Ian Reid, Sean Maung, and Estevan Oriol. Born and raised in Japan, Yayoi Kusama has consistently created artwork about repetition and the concept of infinity. Celebrating the recent opening of the final phase of its Chinese Garden, The Huntington presents an exhibition of contemporary Chinese calligraphy as the inaugural installation in the garden’s new art gallery, the Studio for Lodging the Mind. The exhibition is designed to illuminate the art form and foster deeper appreciation of its expressive qualities. The works on view comprise the original calligraphic scrolls that served as the models for inscriptions throughout the garden. To complement the show, a series of calligraphy demonstrations by featured artists will be offered inside an adjacent structure known as the Flowery Brush Library.

Until Nov 10 Four giant, illuminated humanoid figures have taken over FIGat7th and are observing the human activity at this bustling retail center! These giants from afar are quiet and gentle, yet curious about our fantastic planet and its inhabitants. Created by Australian artist Amanda Parer, these edgy and ephemeral artworks explore the natural world, its fragility and our role within it. Inspiration for this light installation has been taken from the 1973 Czech/ French film Fantastic Planet (La Planète Sauvage). Japanese American National Museum 100 N Central Ave. Los Angeles, CA 90012

The Japanese American National Museum is the largest museum in the United States dedicated to sharing the experience of Americans of Japanese ancestry. Common Ground: The Heart of Community, their ongoing exhibition, incorporates hundreds of objects, documents, and photographs collected by the museum. The exhibition chronicles 130 years of Japanese American history, beginning with the early days of the Issei pioneers, through the World War II incarceration to the present. Among the many notable artifacts on display is a Heart Mountain barracks, an original structure saved and preserved from the concentration camp in Wyoming.

The Union Center for the Arts anchors the northwestern end of the Little Tokyo Historic District. Completed in 1923, The building was the former Union Church, the combined home of three Japanese American congregations. After suffering severe damage during the 1994 Northridge earthquake, the Little Tokyo Service Center Community Development Corporation completed a multi-million dollar renovation of the building in 1998 to house three arts organizations: East West Players, America’s premier Asian American Theatre; Visual Communications, a nonprofit with the mission to develop and support the voices of Asian American and Pacific Islander filmmakers and media artists; and LA Artcore, an art space dedicated to recognizing diverse artistic accomplishments and bringing innovative exhibits and events to the public.

Family owned and operated since 1903, Fugetsu-Do is the longest running mochi business in Little Tokyo. They are famous for their variety of hand made Japanese confections, from small sweet cakes to chocolate filled mochi – a Japanese confection found usually in the shape of a small, round rice cake which can be eaten with condiments such as kinako (roastedsoy bean flour), manju (sweet red bean paste), soy sauce dip, and seaweed. Traditionally, mochi is made by pounding steamed glutinous rice in a large wooden mortar, called the usu, with a wooden mallet called the kine. Mochi was originally made as offerings to kami (gods) at shrines, and eventually became an integral part of the Japanese New Year tradition..
