Your Essential Guide to DTLA’s Michelin Restaurants

Gourmet diners rejoice! Michelin Guide recently updated its coveted awards, recognizing a wide swath of downtown Los Angeles restaurants, many not far from Circa. DTLA currently boasts four Michelin Star restaurants, as our city continues to be a magnet for talented chefs and restauranteurs. While Michelin’s celebrated stars tend to skew more upscale, the organization also recognizes smaller, casual, and more affordable places with its Bib Gourmand Awards, a non-starred honor that still carries a lot of clout. And Michelin judges have added a number of “new discovery” restaurants to their Michelin Guide California selection, including several in downtown LA. Whether these restaurants will receive a Michelin Star or a Bib Gourmand is yet to be determined, but it’s a great vote of confidence for our culinary community.

Discover LA’s Award-Winning Artisanal Wine Scene

September signals harvest time at vineyards throughout the Golden State. But did you know that Los Angeles County encompasses six different American Viticultural Areas or AVAs? The AVA on a wine label indicates the specific geographical area a wine comes from and where the grapes are grown.

Los Angeles has a storied history of wine-making – in fact, LA was once called the “city of vines.” Commercial winemaking began in downtown Los Angeles when Jean-Louis Vignes built his winery around a 400 year old sycamore near today’s Union Station. Throughout the 19th century, many acres of grapevines grew right where contemporary landmarks now stand, and a number of downtown streets are named after old winemakers. Today, award-winning artisanal wineries are producing throughout the region, including Pasadena, Santa Clarita, Bel Air, Malibu, and even DTLA near Circa.

Pamper Your Pet During the Dog Days of Summer

Did you ever wonder where the expression “Dog Days of Summer” comes from? That phrase actually dates back to ancient times and relates to the brightest star in the sky, Sirius, the Dog Star. At the peak of summer, the Sun lies in the same part of the sky as Sirius, and early civilizations thought that the combined heat of Sirius and the Sun caused midsummer’s sweltering weather. Of course, the appearance of Sirius doesn’t actually affect the weather, but the “Dog Days” connection with sultry summer heat has continued to this day.
