Though their interests are varied, These Days’ embrace of creative rebellion and nonconformist culture, communities, and artists is apparent in everything they curate. Before heading out, check the tides and plan to arrive about an hour before the lowest tide so you have time to explore without worrying about rising water. The park also offers campgrounds shaded by giant sycamores, and back-country hiking.

El Matador State Beach is the most popular of the three beaches within Robert H. Meyer Memorial State Beach. Start at their parking lot on the bluff, with picnic tables that look out over the Pacific Ocean. A trail descends through unique formations on the face of the bluff, then stairs take you down to the beach. Proceed north on the beach to discover caves and arches in the rocks. It’s best to visit these natural features at low tide. Pack some water shoes, as the rocks can be difficult to navigate. There are no services or amenities at El Matador, so bring your own beach gear.

Lechuza Beach is a lesser-known public beach in Malibu, located below homes at the northern end of Broad Beach Road. The best public access is at the center of the beach with an entrance on Broad Beach Road across from a short cul-de-sac called Bunnie Lane. From this entrance, there is a short walk through a tree-covered corridor, then down a few flights of stairs to the sandy beach. There are several large rocks in the surf, making Lechuza a very photogenic spot. Sorry pet parents, no dogs are allowed on the beach.

Follow the trail down to the beach at Dume Cove and discover the amazing tide pools and wildlife habitats.

Crystal Cove State Park encompasses over three miles of waterfront, straddling the city border of Newport Beach and Laguna Beach. Restrooms are available on-site. You are welcome to pack your own picnic with food, beer and wine, but no hard liquor is permitted. They will also sell food onsite. The box office and snack bar have gotten a new treatment as well, and are now reminiscent of the theatre’s original postwar Route 66 heritage.

Built on the site of a former orange ranch and named for its location on Van Buren Blvd. in the historic Arlington district of Riverside, the Van Buren Drive-in Theater opened in 1964 with a single screen. Today, the theater has been completely renovated, featuring the latest drive-in theater technology including FM transmitters, Technalight, and a state-of-the-art projection system. The most striking element of this restoration is the art mural displayed on the original screen tower depicting a vista of 1930s era Riverside, reminiscent of vintage orange crate labels so prized by collectors today.

A real Southern California icon, the Vineland Drive-In opened in 1955 with James Mason in 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea, and in 1981, it expanded to become a 4-screen theatre with a car capacity of 1,700. A full concession stand is available with all your favorite movie snacks including pizza, hot dogs, nachos, burgers, and popcorn.

Many outdoor concerts are free, such as Grand Performances and The Music Center’s Dance DTLA, not far from Circa. Major museums such as LACMA and The Getty Center are hosting free concerts as well.
