April 20 Spend an evening with a true Broadway legend, returning to LA Opera for a solo concert after unforgettable star turns in The Ghosts of Versailles and Rise and Fall of the City of Mahagonny. In her new concert, the three-time Tony Award winner performs an array of songs that are touchstones and reflections on her life growing up in America—from a young girl during the burgeoning rock and roll scene of the fifties, to coming of age in the politically and socially turbulent sixties, to eventually achieving success with both career and family.

Written by Donald Margulies, Dinner with Friends tells the story about two married couples who have been best friends for years and their relationship with each other and time. Director and Producer Peter Allas explains that “this play is a reflection of what all couples go through and whether they are willing to examine—or not—marriage, friendship, commitment, or even betrayal in any form, and deal with the possibility of loneliness when it is always evolving.”

Co-presented with LA  Opera, Book of Mountains & Seas, presents a fantastical world of sunbirds, demons and hairy giants evoked in a fascinating work of vocal theater for 12 singers, two percussionists, and six puppet masters. Composer/librettist Huang Ruo took his inspiration from a classic compilation of Chinese mythology first transcribed in the fourth century B.C. Over the years, these stories have become part of Chinese written and oral history, shifted and reshaped to match contemporary times. Performed in Mandarin with English subtitles.

Enjoy Shakespeare under the oaks at Will Geer’s Theatricum Botanicum. Founder Will Geer, noted for his work on the New York stage, in film, and on radio, established the theatre on his property in Topanga in 1973. Because he held a degree in botany, the theater was named for a landmark botany text book, Theatricum Botanicum, which means, quite literally, “a garden theatre.” Today, under the creative supervision of his daughter, Artistic Director Ellen Geer, Theatricum Botanicum has blossomed into a vital creative force that has been recognized internationally for its interpretation of Shakespeare’s work. The unusual architecture and innovative concert hall design initially ignited controversy, but it now serves as a model for concert halls all over the world.

The Metropolitan Opera Nightly Opera Stream

During this extraordinary time, the Met hopes to brighten the lives of their audience members even while their stage is dark. The Metropolitan Opera is offering free Nightly Opera Streams on their website – performances that show off opera at its most thrilling, thought-provoking, and uplifting. Each day, a different encore presentation from the company’s Live in HD series is available for free streaming, with each performance available for a period of 23 hours, from 7:30 p.m. EDT until 6:30 p.m. the following day. The schedule will include outstanding complete performances from the past 14 years of cinema transmissions, starring all of opera’s greatest singers.

Geffen Stayhouse, presented by the Geffen Playhouse, is sharing exclusive, original content every Wednesday from some of their wonderful Geffen alumns and favorite theater artists. You can also watch full-length productions of Geffen Playhouse shows on BroadwayHD, including Long Day’s Journey Into Night, featuring Alfred Molina and Jane Kaczmarek; Thom Pain, featuring Rainn Wilson (The Office); and Benjamin Scheuer’s The Lion. And as a special treat, Benjamin is presenting an exclusive performance of “Weather the Storm” from The Lion all the way from Wales, UK, where he’s hunkering down with his family.

Hammer Museum Watch & Listen

Art has the power to transport us and to give insight into pressing cultural, political, and social questions. We may not be able to gather together to share music in person, but current circumstances will not prevent LACO from providing you with exquisite, enduring, personal musical experiences. LACO is happy to announce that their musicians have generously volunteered to share a wide variety of audio and video options during this time.
