Bastille Day is right around the corner, commemorating the storming of the Bastille on July 14, 1789 and the birth of the French Republic. For the first time ever, the Consulate General of France in Los Angeles, in partnership with Grand Performances, is launching a large-scale Bastille Day celebration in the heart of Downtown! The sizable French population in Los Angeles is represented by a creative wave of artisans, entrepreneurs, and restauranteurs who are making a significant impact on our culture and dining habits. Local French vendors will offer delicious bites and products that showcase the French art de vivre, such as crêpes, quiches, pastries, and handmade goods. The night wraps up with a DJ set from Joachim Garraud, a pioneer of the French Touch, who will turn California Plaza into a giant open-air dance floor. Free admission.

And just in time for Memorial Day weekend, Day Trip in the Park returns to Los Angeles Historic State Park on May 25. For an experience that’s literally music under the stars, Mount Wilson Observatory launched its Sunday Afternoon Concerts in the Dome series. Mount Wilson Observatory is launching its 2025 season of Sunday Afternoon Concerts in the Dome. Artistic Director Cécilia Tsan curates thoughtful musical adventures under the magnificent vaulted dome of the 100-inch telescope, featuring an eclectic program of jazz, classical, mariachi, and more. The 100-inch telescope is the instrument with which astronomer Edwin Hubble discovered our place in an expanding universe, and so expanded our comprehension. The dome for the telescope is a 20th century temple to science, whose acoustics rival the great cathedrals of Europe.

Since 2009, The Getty has welcomed bands like Woods, Chicano Batman, and Thundercat to celebrate the season under the setting Los Angeles sun. This year, there will be five concerts over five weekends from May until end of August. Although outside alcohol isn’t allowed, you can bring your own food and drink. Sing and dance to the best of Broadway, celebrating the music of Jerry Herman, Andrew Lloyd Webber, Cy Coleman, Stephen Schwartz and more. The concert is performed on the plaza in front of city hall, so bring a lawn chair and/or blanket. Folding chairs may be rented for a small fee. This concert is free to the public, no tickets or reservations required. Gates open for food trucks at 7PM. Concert begins at 8PM.

Attendees are encouraged to arrive early and can bring in their own picnic items. Food and beverages will also be available for purchase before the show begins. The concerts are free to attend, but attendees need to RSVP for passes in advance.
